What’s your background in music?
Joel has always been immersed in music. He studied audio engineering, worked with touring crews, managed a music store, and has a large CD collection focused on thrash and hard rock. His all-time favorite artist is Thin Lizzy, though his tastes range from Supertramp to Emiliana Torrini.
What inspired you to pursue music?
The availability of affordable home equipment and software has enabled Joel to explore his musical dreams at his own pace, using tools that allow endless possibilities for sound exploration.
How would you describe your style of music?
Joel’s music is best described as ethereal audio landscapes with unexpected, quirky turns. He enjoys creating unique pieces from scratch, preferring to use his own sounds rather than relying on external loops or samples.
How is your personality reflected in your work?
As a self-proclaimed metalhead with diverse interests, Joel’s personality is fluid, blending joy, sorrow, and celebration into his music. His work reflects personal expression and emotional healing, offering listeners a chance to connect on a deeper level.
What’s your creative process?
Joel’s process often begins with a concept or an emotional response to an aural texture. For commissioned or conceptual pieces, inspiration can strike quickly—like his track “20,000 Leagues Under the Sea,” completed in one evening. He carefully layers sounds, removing anything that doesn’t complement the composition.
What’s your latest release?
Dolorous is Joel’s latest album. It explores emotionally darker paths, blending spacey, ambient textures with deeply personal themes to process and heal inner conflicts.
What challenges did you face during this release?
Joel faced significant Logic Pro issues that set him back two weeks. Fortunately, no music was lost in the process. (Apple, are you listening?)
How do you promote your music?
Joel leverages Instagram, Bandcamp, and tools like GetMusic to share his work. Occasionally, his wife creates custom Olio Flux merchandise, including shirts and car stickers. While sales are a bonus, his primary focus remains on the joy of creating music.
How do you engage with fans?
Joel uses Bandcamp emails for updates, participates in Bandcamp Fridays, and engages with fans online. He is open to collaborations and loves connecting with his audience.
