Introduction & Background
My name is Todd Glidewell and I am the solo human behind The Sleeping Cliffs project. I play all the instruments, which are primarily guitar, bass, drums, and keyboards (which is a Rhodes in most cases). I currently live in Blacksburg, Virginia, but I have lived all up and down the Virginia Appalachian Mountains for the last 25 years. I've also lived in Texas, Seattle, Georgia, and I spent my middle and high school days in Belgium (Europe). I've been composing music, playing shows, and releasing albums in one band or another for almost 30 years now, and this is my first solo project.
I've always been drawn to the drums. Outside of school band, the drum kit was the first instrument that I bought with my own money, and that was in 8th grade. I wanted to make music like Nirvana, Led Zeppelin, The Beastie Boys, and Metallica. I was in my first band within a year and have never stopped playing and writing. Over the years though I picked up guitar, vocals, and bass, and played them all at various times.
Musical Identity
My love of drums is a definitive hallmark of my music. One of my musical friends once said my "guitars are percussive, and my drums are musical." I also love layers and layers of interweaving melodies, regardless of the instrument. Those two elements I think make up the primary thrust of my "style." On my bio I use the phrase "Soulful, rhythmic, electro-rock" as the backbone and musical intention behind my music. The reality is more complex and hard to pin to a single genre since my style draws from decades of influences that range from:
- Rock
- Indietronica
- Funk
- Soul
- Neo-psychedelia
- Jazz
- Post-rock
- Alternative
At the end of the day, I record any and every idea I have, and if it's working for me (i.e. I'm bopping my head to it and making the stink face), then I release it.
Current Work
My new album, "Business," is out now on Bandcamp, and will be out on the streaming platforms on Feb 13th. It's a 10-song collection of new songs that I started writing when my wife and I moved into our new house (in Blacksburg, VA), and I completely rebuilt my recording studio and improved the layout, process, and workflow that I use to write and record. I went a LOT simpler with this album than my last one (The Dredges), and there are just fewer tracks and more space to breathe in the songs.
The song titles are a side-eye to the business books that I have read as a part of my job working in leadership roles in Software Development. It's tongue-in-cheek, because as a professional I do endorse some of those books, but as a musician they are almost completely irrelevant to my creative side.
Promotion & Engagement
As this is my 6th album (3 full length, including this one, and 3 EPs) I actually have a small but loyal fanbase that buys and spins my music, but I spend a LOT of time on Threads promoting the music community there. My Bandcamp presence is growing too and I'm hosting a listening party this Wednesday at 7:30. I also have a healthy amount of music videos on my YouTube account that get decent traction.
