Antonin De Bemels

Antonin De Bemels’ artistic career spans more than two decades, during which he has played many roles: video artist, VJ, DJ, composer, sound designer, live performer, writer, mask maker... His work is defined by the urge to express himself, whatever the medium, with a particular attention to the audience, with whom he always tries to create an emotional bound. While having a strong background as an experimental film-maker, his goal in everyone of his projects is to go beyond pure formal experimentation and tell a story, whether abstract or not, as long as it speaks to the heart.

Antonin De Bemels’ discography showcases remarkable versatility, ranging from experimental ambient to tribal techno to minimalist piano, often within the same album. And when improvising with his variable-geometry band Les Antonymes, it goes in a more "post" way: post rock, post dub, post jazz, post blues…

About music production per se, it all started - at the end of the 90s - with FM synthesis and other forms of digital processing. Antonin’s very first compositions were made using rudimentary video editing software, laboriously, piece by piece, without a tempo or looping system like in modern DAWs, which he was only to discover later. Now he uses a combination of field recordings, acoustic instruments like piano or harmonica, and electronic devices such as the Roland TR-8s groovebox or Asturia’s Microfreak.
