Goodbye Wudaokou
Mirror Skies (re-issue)
Mat Mills' debut Mirror Skies album was limited to a mere 20-copy run when it came out last year, so it's with great pleasure that we bring a reissue to Subjangle (following the success of Mat's sophomore release goodbyewudaokou.bandcamp.com/album/anything-of-us)
Mirror Skies traverses themes of lost love, yearning, childhood, legacy and the beauty and danger of living in the past across a kaleidoscopic array of tracks, ranging from jangly dream pop to shoegaze, post-punk, alt rock and well, just out and out pop.
Mirror Skies received much acclaim from the micro-indie blog community on release and reached the heady heights of a good few end-of-year lists. The always excellent Heavy Metal Kids UK said: "Debut album Mirror Skies wears its heart unashamedly on its sleeve with its focus on love and connection both present and past. Mills’ soaring songcraft ensures the instrumental breaks are often as moving as the lyrical content itself, adding a dynamic edge to an album that never stands still."
White Light// White Heat enthused: "delivers an intricate and mercurial mixture of fuzz-dusted US Indie Rock and shimmery Shoegaze, studded with moody Wave/Post-punk, jangly riffs and textural electronic atmospherics".
Reviewing the track, New Century Regrets, Austin Town Hall stated: "If you missed the world of the Pains of Being Pure at Heart, and you want to just celebrate the joy of indiepop, then click play."
The wonderful Rosy Overdrive blog recently called Mirror Skies "a special thing–a lifelong musician finally makes a debut album, turning in an expansive record steeped in his influences (post-punk, new wave, college rock, C86) with a strong personal stamp on them."
