Crayon Cats
Songs About You 1 & 2

The band members who started the Sarah Records movement in the UK and US must be shaking their heads in resignation as their children and grandchildren have largely forsaken their jangly indie-pop genes to move increasingly towards a more driven, chiming college rock sound. Meanwhile, a number of Indonesian acts have grabbed that particular baton to take over the twinkling fey jangle-pop sound that us oldies still love.

However, Jakarta's Crayon Cats, along with their cunningly named Songs About You 1 & 2 compilation album, which includes both the Songs About You (September 2024) and Songs About You 2 (February 2025) EPs, are something a unique addition to the burgeoning jangly indie-pop of Indonesia, which has been superbly represented by labels such as Chaotic Pop Records, Faster Records, Disanorak, Shiny Happy Records, Kolibri Records, and many others.

As such, from the fuzz-pop insistence of The Battle, It's A Love Story Willy Nilly, and October Girlfriend, with their The Flatmates insistences to the propulsion percussion and faux-punk- meets-noise pop of My Dear Boy,Dumb, Sometimes You Regret Finding A Secret That It Should Remain A Secret, and Not The Best Day, which are the polar opposites to the dreamy-fuzz of Hospital Hopper and Cloud Over You, Crayon Cats is the foremost current act for showcasing all the different shades of melodic noise-pop from the past and present.

Adding perfect ink spots to the most twee of waters, the Crayon Cats add some much-needed grit to the Indonesian pop scene
