Alpine Subs
Up With The Geese (double album)
60s pop / 70s pop / jangle pop / indie pop
After a two-year hiatus, Chicago's Alpine Subs are back to release their fifth album since 2019 on the South African Subjangle label, and this time it is a twenty track double album of brilliance.
The extended length of the release may have been the sole means for the band to effectively present a sound that has expanded upon the melodic beauty of the band's previous work, while also incorporating subtle modern elements that demonstrate their exploration of contemporary music and its increased integration into their aesthetic.
As a result, Rely On Me, Homesick Feeling, and Walk Away still feature the jangly Americana that dominated the previous Through The Blinds album (2023), while Sunrise on Jonquil and Helpless showcase their omnipresent ability to craft perfect 60s and 70s jangle-pop-inflected melodies out of languid simplicity.
However, while the pop foundation of yesteryear once served as their core, the subtle nuances of today now clearly receive greater emphasis in Up With The Geese. As a result, gentle fuzz-pop strains caress the aforementioned pop melodies in Taken Under Foam, Won't You Tell Me, For No-One To Hear, and Be A Shame, whilst a jangling stake is driven straight through the heart of the 2nd Grade-style power-pop sound in Be A Shame
