Zenxith
Cooling Tower
This is the 11th album titled “Cooling Tower”, this was recorded in Zenxith’s house from January through till March 2024, this album is essential indie pop & especially DIY indie pop & without a doubt my best album to date. 14 unique lofi tracks ranging from acoustic guitars, keyboards, handclaps, shakers & tambourines. Female backing vocals on almost half the songs by American singer Yvonne Allen who also featured a little on my previous album, this really adds to the variety of the album, boy girl harmonies a very very soft & sweet album, a gentle twee feel, genuine DIY as always with simple drum machine drums. No label, no studio, just me from my room, sticking to the DIY ethos that I respect.
Each track is also filled with a persistent tambourine & shaker, this is gentle indie pop, yet it doesn’t just sound like the generic indie pop we all know & love, as I’m not trying to replicate that, this is truly a unique take on indie pop. This is available on CD as issue number 3 on my own DIY label Salt Mine Records, limited to 60 copies.
This is what Monorail Music had to say.
“McGee’s Zenxith project has progressed to shiny CDs but the music is reassuringly lo fi and instinctive, blasting out catchy hook after catchy hook. You sometimes wonder how McGee can do it, specially over so many tracks but somehow the classic tropes associated with this music are reconstituted to be fresh and lovingly ramshackle. There’s a little more vulnerability this time around along with some brilliant Kinksian vignettes on the absurdity of British life, and all packaged in a neat CD for MAXIMUM audio fidelity.
Not really sure how McGee can do it so consistently but this Lawrence fronting Television Personalities thing he’s got going is here to stay.”
