Sebastian Arnold: The Mad Scientist Drummer

Some musicians play instruments. Sebastian Arnold engineers them. The Berlin-based artist, drummer, and developer occupies a rare intersection of hand-crafted musicianship and bleeding-edge technology — building not just his music, but the very software that makes his live performances possible. His sound is a danceable, largely instrumental fusion of atmospheric jazz, electronica, and post-rock, conjured entirely in real time with no playback, no safety net, and no shortage of ambition.

"I am a multifaceted artist and developer who loves to explore the intersections of technology, creativity, human communication, music, and machines," Sebastian explains. As the self-styled 'mad scientist drummer', he operates as a one-man band — using his acoustic drum kit to interact live with sequencers and synthesizers, shaping cinematic electronic soundscapes from behind a single kit.

Origin Story: From South Germany to Berlin

Sebastian's musical roots stretch back to the late 1980s, growing up in a small town in southern Germany with a rich cultural history. He picked up drumsticks at his local music school at the age of six, and within a few years had started his first band with classmates. That early spark of collaboration was soon complicated — productively — by a growing obsession with early 1990s techno and DJ culture, fed by German music television and print magazines.

Rather than abandon the drums, he began layering worlds: connecting a Yamaha keyboard to hi-fi and light equipment, recording original music and distributing it on cassettes to friends. The mad scientist was already at work.

The pivotal shift came with the move to Berlin in 2005. The city sharpened his creative focus and deepened the influence of electronic music on his practice. He threw himself into a string of band projects spanning Elektro rock, Funk-Jazz, Singer-Songwriter, and Hip Hop. He experimented with a Yamaha CS-15 synthesizer, explored digital keyboards, and then encountered the instrument that changed everything: the Nord Modular G2.

"Its digital patching system allowed infinite ways of interaction between microphones, MIDI signals, sequencers and synthesizer modules. I picked up some drum triggers and finally connected my drums and electronic music production into a coherent piece — the 'mad scientist drummer'."

Musical Identity: Live, Layered, Cinematic

Sebastian describes his style as "a danceable, mostly instrumental fusion of atmospheric jazz and electronic post-rock." In practice, that means acoustic drums locked in dialogue with synthesizers and vocoder voices, all assembled in real time into sprawling, cinematic soundscapes. The one-man-band format is not a limitation — it is the whole point.

His personality is woven directly into the music. "I have always been a curious person who likes to combine technology, communication, hand-crafted things, visual and auditory artworks," he says. "My music is the part of my life where I can combine all of these aspects into something that represents myself in a durable way."

That curiosity extends to his creative process. Sebastian improvises freely across a wide range of instruments — e-piano, synthesizers, percussion, drums, electric bass — often capturing raw ideas via loop pedal before shaping them into full compositions. The secret structural weapon in that process is SENODE, his own self-developed sequencer application.

"When I start to arrange these ideas into full songs, I always use my sequencer app Senode to create small flexible modules of musical phrases," he explains. "After that I can play live with those elements and put them together to a larger piece." Latest Release: Monolog Memories

Sebastian's most recent album, Monolog Memories, is both a homecoming and a reckoning. Described as "a sonic retrospective of a decade of personal developments," the record brought together eight hidden gems from his early live sets, woven alongside new compositions into a single, coherent piece.

"After eight years of silence in the studio, I've assembled eight hidden gems from my early live sets and woven them together with new compositions. Finally, these fragments have converged into a single, coherent piece — and it enabled me to bring them back to the stages finally."

Getting there was no small feat. Between the birth of these songs and their eventual release, Sebastian's life transformed entirely: he completed a PhD, became a father, and moved into the professional IT world. The album waited patiently through all of it.

"It was a bit of a balancing act," he reflects. "I always knew these songs had to be released, but it took me a long time to find that window of mental and emotional space to dive back into the production." That window, when it finally opened, produced something worth the wait.

Connecting With Audiences: Nerds, Drummers, and Everyone in Between

Sebastian has found a loyal and enthusiastic audience by leaning into transparency. His performance videos on YouTube have proven particularly effective — offering a captivating mix of human musicianship and technical spectacle that resonates equally with synthesizer enthusiasts, drummers, and jazz fans. "People love my performance videos on YouTube," he says simply. "Apart from that, it's always a good idea to come and see me play live!"

Beyond the stage and screen, Sebastian engages deeply with technical communities — including users of SENODE — through talks, workshops, and personal sessions for musicians and producers. He delivered a TEDxCluj talk in 2016, and continues to share behind-the-scenes material on his website. He is also an active presence on the Fediverse, connecting with fellow artists, creators, and listeners on his own terms.

What's Coming Next

Having broken the studio silence with Monolog Memories, Sebastian is already deep into new territory. He is currently working on brand-new material due for release in early 2027 — and from the sounds of it, it will mark a genuine evolution. "It will be a very funky album with many vocal tracks and a somewhat revisited approach to my acoustic drum sound," he teases. Consider our attention firmly captured.
