Some albums arrive as a statement. Azure, the debut record from Perth-based singer/songwriter Safiro, is exactly that — a candid, carefully crafted document of first love, told without apology and without disguise. It's the kind of album Safiro always wished existed. So they made it themselves.

From Piano Lessons to Songwriting Obsession

Safiro's relationship with music began almost before memory. Piano lessons started at age four, and by eleven, trumpet, violin, organ, and vocal training had all entered the picture. Songwriting followed at fourteen — and by their own admission, it hasn't let go since.

"It has consumed me since then."

That early immersion across multiple instruments gave Safiro a musical fluency that now shows up in the layered, genre-blending sound of their work. The foundation was always there. What took time was finding the story worth telling — and the means to tell it properly.

A Road Trip, a Friend, and a Record That Had to Be Made

The tipping point came on a road trip with a friend named Cam. Two of the songs that would eventually appear on Azure were written during that journey, and something clicked. Recording the album stopped being a dream and became, in Safiro's own words, a necessity.

"It wasn't until I went on a road trip with one of my friends, Cam, where I wrote two of the songs on my debut album, Azure, that recording it became a necessity. Now that it's here, I'm yearning for the next studio session!"

That hunger — for the road, for the studio, for the next creative challenge — runs through everything Safiro does.

The Sound: Pop with Depth and Range

Safiro describes their style as pop with 80s, acoustic, and even speakeasy influences — a combination that sounds eclectic on paper but feels cohesive in practice. It's a sound rooted in classic songcraft but never afraid to borrow from unexpected corners.

The creative process is similarly instinct-driven. It might begin with idle exploration on piano or guitar, or with a melody or lyric surfacing unbidden — at which point, Safiro heads straight to an instrument to chase it down. The variety of starting points keeps the work feeling alive and unforced.

And the original plan? An indie acoustic album. The studio had other ideas.

"I initially set out to write an indie acoustic album. Boy oh boy did that change during studio time!"

Azure: An Unapologetically Queer Debut

Azure traces the arc of Safiro's first love — its beginning and its aftermath — with honesty and specificity. But the album carries a broader intention, too. Growing up, Safiro rarely encountered songs that reflected the kind of love stories they would come to experience. Queer voices, when present at all, were often buried so deep in ambiguity that the meaning could be read any number of ways.

Safiro chose a different path.

"I wanted to create an album that was unapologetically gay without detracting from my experiences. I like to think I achieved that."

Azure doesn't hedge. It doesn't hide. It stands as the kind of record Safiro needed as a young listener — and that countless others will find themselves in now.

What Comes Next

For now, Safiro is content to let Azure breathe. The focus is on hearing what listeners make of it — and giving the album the space it deserves before moving on to whatever comes next. The next studio session is already calling, but first: this moment.
