There's a particular kind of honesty that lives in music made for processing things words can't quite hold. For Chicagoland-based artist Chris The Wiz, that honesty is the whole point. A multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and independent artist, Chris operates in the hazy overlap between cloud rap, ambient, and experimental hip-hop — music that feels less like a genre and more like a specific hour of the night.

A Life Built Around Sound

Chris's relationship with music didn't start in a studio — it started in an orchestra. He played cello through school, then expanded outward, teaching himself guitar and drums and leaning into a love of singing that ran alongside all of it. Eventually, the logical next step wasn't performing someone else's music. It was making his own.

"Making my own music became a way to bring all of those things together," he says. That foundation — formal training folded into self-taught instinct — quietly shapes everything he creates, even when the end result sounds nothing like a cello.

It's a track that sounds confident and uneasy at the same time, which is exactly the point.

"Bands" also serves as an introduction to what's coming next. Chris is currently preparing his debut album Afterglow, produced entirely by MAYHEM, set for release on August 28, 2026. The project spans 15 tracks built around a hazy, late-night atmosphere, with a lot of personal reflection running underneath the surface. It represents the most complete statement he's made as an artist so far — and given how deliberately he builds his sound, it's a release worth watching for.

Building an Audience the Right Way

On the promotional side, Chris has found the most traction through short-form clips, live footage, and getting his music in front of people who already connect with underground hip-hop. He's still experimenting — still figuring out, as he puts it, what turns attention into actual listeners. That self-awareness is refreshing in a space where a lot of artists perform certainty they don't quite have.

Offline and online, he prioritizes genuine connection over marketing mechanics. He shows up through social media, SoundCloud, live performances, and direct conversations — the kind of engagement that builds something real over time rather than optimizing for numbers that don't stick.

What Keeps Him Going

At the end of the conversation, Chris offers something that might be the most honest thing an artist can say: he's not entirely sure why he keeps making music.
