Sergei Tumanov
Sergei Tumanov is a Melbourne-based sound artist, composer and music producer working across experimental music, sound art, field recording and audiovisual practice.
His work explores the relationship between sound, physical space and the environments we inhabit. Using field recordings, electronic and acoustic instruments, found and domestic objects, noise generators and experimental sound-processing techniques, Tumanov transforms everyday and environmental sounds into new sonic forms. His practice often begins with listening — to a place, an object, an electronic signal or an acoustic environment — and develops through processes of manipulation, extraction and transformation.
Since the early 2010s, Tumanov has worked both independently and collaboratively with musicians and artists across Australia, Europe and beyond. His work has appeared on international independent labels and in sound-art and contemporary-art contexts, with more than 30 releases spanning solo recordings, collaborations, soundtracks and audiovisual works. He has also performed and toured across Australia and Europe.
Tumanov is the founder of NCTMMRN, an independent Melbourne-based label established in 2017 and dedicated to experimental music and sound art. He is also a co-founder of UNDER SOUND, an international platform focused on audiovisual and visual art projects.
Alongside his artistic practice, Tumanov works as a sound engineer, music producer and composer for film, performance and visual art.
His recent work continues to investigate the hidden sonic potential of everyday environments, electronic systems and natural phenomena — treating sound not simply as music, but as a material through which places, objects and experiences can be observed, altered and reimagined.
