Hot Nights

Find Sophie Noel

Playful piano, bright melodies, and a touch of '60s pop make "Hot Nights" feel like the soundtrack
to a perfect summer afternoon. Beneath that warmth is a reflection on nostalgia, environmental
guilt, and how quickly our relationship with the world has changed.

"'Hot Nights' is about the little doses of nihilism and self-importance inherent in
how we treat environmental issues at the individual level," says Noel. "I used to
drive down to California with my friends at every opportunity when I was young,
and now I'm like... think of the gas! Think of the cost!"

Originally written as a poem, the song began as a list of ordinary habits Noel imagined future
generations might find shocking: taking long showers, driving hundreds of kilometres for fun,
refusing to wear sunscreen. Somewhere along the way, it became something more personal, a
reflection on realizing that many of those habits belonged to their own recent past.

"The song is written from a bit of an exaggerated personal perspective," Noel
explains. "It's kind of like if I took the most nihilistic voices in my head and made
them into one character. Which, in retrospect, is probably just who I was at 19."
