Sun Ground: Finding the Exotic in the Automatic

From Reggio Calabria, at the very tip of Italy's boot, Antonio Luvarà has spent years building an electronic world under the name Sun Ground — one shaped by atmosphere, tension, melody, and a deep fascination with the unfamiliar. After six singles, an EP, and releases through Danish label Chetah Play, 2026 marks a landmark moment: the arrival of his debut album, Exotic Automatic.

"I want the music to leave room for interpretation: for everyone to attach their own meaning to it, or simply find themselves somewhere within those echoes, textures and sounds."

Origin Story: From Pink Floyd to Warp Records

Luvarà's musical journey began as a listener. It was 2010, and Pink Floyd's sense of atmosphere, space, and experimentation lodged itself somewhere deep — long before he knew where it would lead. That initial fascination gradually widened into something more restless and exploratory. The mechanical futurism of Kraftwerk, the ambient landscapes of Brian Eno, and eventually the fractured, unpredictable worlds of Aphex Twin and the artists orbiting Warp Records all left their marks.

Sun Ground was born in 2019, the natural result of years spent experimenting in the studio. It became a way of turning that constant search for new sounds into something deeply personal: electronic music that doesn't just occupy space, but inhabits it.

A Sound That's Hard to Pin Down — On Purpose

Ask Luvarà to define his style and he'll tell you, with characteristic honesty, that it's difficult. He resists easy categorisation, preferring instead to let the music speak across the blurred edges of experimental electronic, ambient, psychedelic, and various strands of IDM. What unifies it isn't a genre tag — it's a mood, a narrative impulse.

"Everything I've listened to over the years has created in me the need to make something deeply personal, rooted in the world around me," he explains. "I try to give my music a narrative, even without singing or writing lyrics — almost like a soundtrack to a collection of experiences."

That narrative dimension is also deeply autobiographical. Sun Ground's music reflects Luvarà's ongoing attempt to free himself from overwhelming thoughts and anxieties — the pressures of being a person in the twenty-first century. Themes of lost collective consciousness, the decline of genuine human interaction, and the gradual dehumanization of modern life run quietly beneath the surface of his compositions.

The Creative Process: Intuitive, Atmospheric, Never Mechanical

There is no single formula to how Sun Ground music gets made. Luvarà describes his process as intuitive — frequently starting from a sound he associates with a real or imagined experience, and then following the emotional and atmospheric current that experience stirs in him. It is, by design, the opposite of mechanical, even as machines are central tools in his work.

Exotic Automatic: The Debut Album

The conceptual heart of Exotic Automatic is a search — not for a physical place, but for a feeling. A sense of detachment from the frantic pace of contemporary life. "Exotic" points outward, toward the distant and the pure. "Automatic" folds back inward, connecting to Luvarà's complicated relationship with machines and the particular feeling of control — and loss of control — they can represent.

"In a way, it's about feeling a little lost and wandering around looking for a place that feels pure."

The road to the finished album was anything but straightforward. By February of the recording year, Luvarà had completed ten tracks he was largely satisfied with — only to scrap every one of them. They didn't fully capture his intended sense of alienation and metaphorical desolation, particularly in terms of sound. He rewrote all ten, pushing the sonic landscape toward something more unpredictable, introducing a stronger and more unsettling feeling of estrangement throughout.

The result is an album that earns both words in its title: exotic in its textures and atmosphere, automatic in its restless, searching momentum.
