Spotlight - Pandorama

Where are you located?

Belgium

What is your artist's name?

Pandorama

How long have you been writing music?

Both members have more than 25 years of experience in making music.

  • Julien has released music under different monikers for different labels.
  • While this is Davy's first full release, he has provided material on a few of Julien's earlier songs.

What inspired you to start playing and making music?

Both members always needed a creative outlet. Sound was the art form that always resonated the most.

What were the driving forces or pivotal moments that inspired you to pursue music?

Music allows us to express ourselves and communicate with and meet people.

How would you describe your style of music?

Melodic, structured indie-electronic music.

How is your personality reflected in your work?

The music is always very eclectic and open-minded. It can drift from very energetic and extroverted to very calm and introverted.

Describe your creative process when you write new music.

  1. One of us comes up with a rough idea and structure, mostly based on synth jams and sampling in Ableton.
  2. We then bounce the track back and forth to flesh it out.
  3. We keep discussing it until we reach something we're happy with, but may let it sit for extended periods (like years) while working on other tracks.

What is the name of your latest release?

Latency

What was the inspiration for that release?

While we didn't work from an initial concept (I personally never do), I think you could say that working together for the first time on a full release was it. After 20 years of knowing each other and working on music several times in that span. Latency?

What challenges or unexpected moments did you encounter during the writing/recording process?

Life got in the way at some point, as it often does, and these tracks were put on hold for a good year and a half before we came back to finish them. Looking back on it, it was just needed to be able to take it where we wanted to.

What strategies do you find most effective for promoting your music?

I think we're still figuring that one out.

How do you engage with your fans online and offline?

  • Bandcamp messages for the most part
  • Julien's own newsletter that he sends to listeners he gathered from his other projects
While Bandcamp messages are nice to quickly get short messages out, the newsletter format is rewarding for everyone, where more information is provided on the music and releases.

We don't play shows and therefore any sort of offline engagement is limited.

What upcoming promotional activities or releases are you most excited about?

To be perfectly honest, there's nothing exciting about promoting music. It's soul-sucking. The music making is what it's all about, what we're excited about. We're excited about sharing music with the world; working to convince people they should spend their time listening to our music and not someone else's (let alone spend money on it) isn't something I look forward to.
