Based in Bali, Indonesia, Michael Wenas represents a unique convergence of disciplines—web developer, musician, researcher, and game creator. His latest musical venture, "Atompunk (Remastered Edition)," showcases an artist unafraid to push boundaries both sonically and conceptually, even when it means navigating platform restrictions and industry controversies.

Musical Origins and Philosophy

Wenas's journey into electronic music began unusually early. "When I was around four to six years old, I remember copying MIDI codes from a cellphone magazine, and that's when I knew I didn't want to pick up conventional instruments. I wanted to work with electronics," he recalls. This early attraction to digital creation eventually led him to generative AI, a tool he embraces despite widespread criticism.

"A lot of people see gen AI as a problem, but I see it as a noose to hang the oppressors with," Wenas explains, positioning his use of technology within broader critiques of capitalism and environmental concerns. His approach reflects a deeper philosophical stance—viewing his musical work as part of what he calls his "occult practice," specifically focused on Theurgy rather than material pursuits.

"To me, my musical work is part of my occult practice. Most people approach the occult for material gains like fame and wealth, but I'm here to do Theurgy and complete a magnum opus that mystics have been working on for centuries."

Creative Process and Sound

Wenas describes his creative process with characteristic candor, involving "a three-day semen retention session and asking God (a lot) to guide my hands into manifesting a Theurgical masterpiece hidden inside all the brainrot and ballroom lingo." This unconventional approach reflects his broader philosophy of vulnerability as essential to artistic creation.

Musically, he gravitates toward what he calls "space chords," exploring diverse sonic territories from Dune-inspired compositions like the Bene Magdala Sisters' "Liberty, Equality, Sorority" to the retrofuturistic sounds of "Atompunk (Remastered Edition)." His upcoming nu-metal project, Asylum Boys' "Relapse," promises to tackle themes of capitalism, Gnosticism, and what he describes as "gooning."

Popular tracks include "NOLA Gay" and "Rendezvous with Agniyama (feat. RGAD)," demonstrating his collaborative spirit and genre-fluid approach.

Platform Challenges and Distribution

"Atompunk (Remastered Edition)" faced immediate challenges when Bandcamp banned it due to their policy against AI-generated content. "I don't fault them for it," Wenas notes, while ensuring the release remained available on platforms like Apple Music and SoundCloud. The project explores themes of digital isolation, with Wenas explaining: "Being chronically online can feel suffocating sometimes, kind of like living inside a post-apocalyptic bunker."

The album also encountered distribution hurdles when an uncensored audio snippet was flagged, leading to multiple versions and eventual release of the uncensored edition.

Community and Anti-Commercialism

Wenas maintains an unconventional relationship with his audience, rejecting traditional fan dynamics. "I don't really believe in commodity fetishism or idol worship, so I affectionately refer to them as my 'fat gooners' and always tell them to 'stay chudai,' because the whole concept of fandom feels ridiculous to me."

This anti-commercial stance extends to his promotional strategies, which he describes with humor: "For me, sleeping with a lot of men—which I didn't do because they've been pretty disappointing lately. The second option is randomly emailing Masonic lodge officers about my releases."

He primarily connects with audiences through Instagram and LinkedIn, focusing on his web development projects and academic research rather than traditional music promotion.

Beyond Music

Wenas's creative output extends far beyond music. He's currently developing "Coelispex," a space life and flight simulator game available on Windows, Android, and Linux. Additionally, he's planning a roman-à-clef novella titled "Pastor Miguel Thorne," demonstrating his multimedia approach to creative expression.

His academic side produces scientific papers once or twice yearly, while his hope for living "in a socialist society where reputation—skills and experiences—is the real currency" informs his artistic philosophy.
