GetMusic's artist spotlight features Hyperestis, sharing the story behind the music, the latest work, and what comes next.
Introduction & Background
Please introduce yourself and share a bit about your background.
Hyperestis, pronounced like "High Priestess", a Portland, OR, USA based solo project of Gabi Emerson so far focused on darkwave, synth pop, post-punk.
What's your musical origin story?
I used to play the toy synthesizers at K-mart and try to sound as much like Duran Duran as possible. I loved the drums, but first learned trumpet and basic campfire guitar stuff.
What were the driving forces or pivotal moments that inspired you to pursue music?
I found I was less shy with a microphone in front of me and lights in my eyes. I liked being able to do something not everyone could, and kept starting and joining bands.
Musical Identity
How would you describe your style of music?
I started out with early Clan of Xymox as a big inspiration, with soaring guitars, lots of layered synths, kind of "more is more" dense 4AD projection, but it has changed over time. I keep accidentally sounding like myself.
How is your personality reflected in your work?
On the first three albums I sort of play characters that are the best and worst aspects of who I am or imagine myself to be, exaggerated, to work through my own issues, though I hope it's stuff others relate to. I am getting away from that, and trying to write things that are honest but not necessarily ripped out of my 5th grade Trapper Keeper.
Describe your creative process when you write new music.
I write my lyrics in cafes around Portland, in fountain pen, because I have to be extra. I write the music separately and match the lyrics later. I am trying to be more deliberate about writing, but what's most natural is to just sit down and play and play over that and play over that. I never know what it's going to sound like and never have a plan.
Current Work
What is the name of your latest release?
Id Ova
What was the inspiration for that release?
It's the 3rd album in a series: A Void, O Diva, Id Ova, and represents the end of a cycle of personal growth. "Id Ova" isn't necessarily a meaningful title, but Ova here is an egg, and Id represents that base part of ourselves that takes the wheel if we aren't paying attention. So, something born of that state.
What challenges or unexpected moments did you encounter during the writing/recording process?
I had just moved from Austin to Portland, and had gotten rid of a lot of my stuff, and my focus was on getting safe and stable, so it took a while to get the music machine moving again. When it did, I realized what worked before wasn't where my energy was anymore, and I had to re-root my sound in where I was.
Promotion & Engagement
What strategies do you find most effective for promoting your music?
My music, though this project goes back to 2022, is still largely unheard. I like GetMusic because right now, giving 100 albums away doesn't lose me money, it just gains me possible listeners. Stuff like playlisting only works while you are in the playlist or have some momentum. I also print out business cards with my linktree and hand them out to anyone unfortunate enough to smile at me.
How do you engage with your fans online and offline?
My BlueSky account is the main place. I am pretty much unknown, so I don't have a lot of interaction with fans, or even really know if I have any.
What upcoming promotional activities or releases are you most excited about?
I am going to do something soon that I hope owes less to genre and more to authenticity. I have some more darkwave stuff as well, and really want to get it all together in 2026 so I don't break my streak.
How can folks contact you?
@hyperestis.bsky.social is my BlueSky, and you can find everything on Bandcamp, Ampwall, and the usual streaming places.
