Spotlight - GREH
GREH is a German metal trio proving you don't need a complicated setup to be heavy - just one guitar, drums, and raw conviction.
Read MoreTell us a bit about yourself.
We are GREH, a metal band based in Germany. We bring a gritty and minimalist sound that relies on just one guitar to create a massive wall of noise. The lineup consists of me, Gjero Krsteski, on guitar, Maurice Muller on drums, and Martin Kocula on vocals. We operate with a DIY mindset, releasing music on our own label, GREH-Recordings, in collaboration with Fetzner Death Records.
What's your musical origin story?
GREH started in 2022. After I left my previous band, HELLGREASER, I wanted to create something different - something raw and personal. It began as a one-man project, but the vision needed more energy. By 2023, it evolved into a full-fledged band when Maurice and Martin joined the fold. That same year, we hit the ground running with our debut EP, Reversion Of The Repressed.
What were the driving forces or pivotal moments that inspired you to pursue music?
The main drive was the desire to create a specific sound character: a combination of rage and heaviness mixed with groove and dissonance. We wanted to prove you don't need a complicated setup to be heavy. We've been motivated by sharing the stage with bands like Bewitcher, Hexis, Fit for an Autopsy, and Firtan, and headlining shows across Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands.
How would you describe your style of music?
Our style is a mixture of black and death metal with strong doom elements. It is gritty and minimalist. We combine sadness and heaviness with groove and dissonance. If you are a fan of bands like Nails, Mantar, Full of Hell, or Sunn O))), you will understand where we are coming from.
How is your personality reflected in your work?
The music is direct and uncompromising, just like us. There is no fluff. The "dysphoric" nature of our sound reflects real emotions - sadness and rage - channeled through a very stripped-down, honest instrumentation. It is about creating a distinct character with limited tools: one guitar, drums, and vocals.
Describe your creative process when you write new music.
The process focuses on maintaining that "minimalist but heavy" atmosphere. Since we only use one guitar, every riff has to count. We focus on groove and dissonance to fill the sonic space. It's about stripping away the unnecessary until only the core intensity remains.
What is the name of your latest releases?
We just released our debut album, Dysphoric Devotion, on January 15, 2025. Before that, we released our digital EP Reversion Of The Repressed in March 2023.
What was the inspiration for that release?
Dysphoric Devotion is the culmination of our journey from a solo project to a live band. It explores themes of despair and heaviness, pushing the "sadness and groove" dynamic further than we did on the EP.
What challenges or unexpected moments did you encounter during the writing/recording process?
The biggest challenge - and our biggest strength - is our limitation. Writing a full album with just one guitar requires creativity to ensure it doesn't sound thin. We had to make sure the "one guitar" approach carried the weight of a full death/black metal production without losing its gritty character.
What strategies do you find most effective for promoting your music?
Playing live is our strongest strategy. We have been touring and headlining since 2023. Getting in front of a crowd and delivering a 40-minute set of pure energy works better than any online ad. Supporting established bands like Firtan and Fit for an Autopsy has also helped us gain a legion of new fans.
How do you engage with your fans online and offline?
Offline, we are there at the shows - we are a live band first. Online, we keep our followers updated on our tour dates and releases. We value the direct connection with the people who come to see us sweat on stage.
How can folks contact you (socials/email/websites etc.)
You can find us on Instagram and Facebook under GREH. You can listen to Dysphoric Devotion on all major streaming platforms. For booking and inquiries, you can reach us directly through our social media channels.
Is there anything else of interest that we should have asked about?
We want to highlight our appreciation for the venues and promoters who support underground metal. We are a band that values a good show environment. We are ready to bring Dysphoric Devotion to more stages this year.
