Spotlight - BEELZE
From Burger King to beats: Meet BEELZE, the NY-based artist whose pandemic boredom sparked a journey into experimental IDM music. 🎵
Read MorePlease introduce yourself and share a bit about your background. Tell us a bit about yourself. (Location, artist name, the works!)
Hello, my name is BEELZE. I'm a New York based artist, but I move around a lot. I was raised in North Carolina in a small town called Sanford.
What's your musical origin story? (when did you start? What inspired you?)
I started producing music around five years ago since the pandemic started. I was so bored that I used pirated Ableton to make literally anything I could possibly make. I remember working at a Burger King listening to Grimes and thinking that that was the kind of music I wanted to make. Now I view her more as an example and not someone to look up to. The Elon stuff cooked her, I can't lie.
What were the driving forces or pivotal moments that inspired you to pursue music?
I went to college for a year and did good until I decided to tank my grades. I had a humanities professor whose lectures I really enjoyed. Before I decided to completely drop out, I showed him one of my songs. He made it very clear that I should probably just keep going with it, so I did. I would've done so anyway, but it was good confirmation at the time.
How would you describe your style of music?
A year ago, I'd say IDK, but nowadays, I think IDM is the best descriptor for my music. I've been listening to Aphex Twin more recently, and I'm also a fan of Nirvana, so it's funny to see genres made to describe basically one or a handful of artists. IDM to Aphex Twin is kind of like Grunge to Nirvana. Regardless, I think with the direction I'm heading creatively, it makes sense to bunch myself in IDM.
How is your personality reflected in your work?
Not sure if it's really for me to say, but I'd hope my comedy shows up well in a lot of the absurd things I make. I'd also hope it reflects my natural eagerness and curiosity.
Describe your creative process when you write new music.
Most of the process involves me sitting around all day doing next to nothing. Either that, or I experience a lot of things at once and then come back to my room to do nothing. After that, I basically just put all of that emotion into my laptop. My setup is:
- MacBook Pro
- Logic Pro
- Sennheiser Headphones
- MIDI fighter 64
I don't always use the MIDI fighter, sometimes I just use my computer keyboard. 90% of my music is made with just MIDI. The only thing that isn't MIDI most times is the drums. Even then, I now often chop drum samples and form the drum patterns I want through MIDI.
What is the name of your latest release?
Misery Wheel
What was the inspiration for that release?
Intense isolation
What challenges or unexpected moments did you encounter during the writing/recording process?
It was honestly pretty seamless to make. It took me less than 15 minutes and only two takes. My setup in Logic is very plug and play, so if I have an idea I can run with it pretty well.
What strategies do you find most effective for promoting your music?
I have yet to find a great one.
How do you engage with your fans online and offline?
It's mostly friends that see my music online, so if they say something to me about it, I talk with them a little or explain it a little more. Offline...
What upcoming promotional activities or releases are you most excited about?
I have a new song coming out later in January that is inspired by the "Come to Daddy" song and music video.
