I love the idea that a song, like a person, can change over time and be a lot of different things. "The St. James Infirmary Blues" is a song that's lived a lot of lives. It tells a curious and mournful story that takes a hard (drunken?) swerve from an empathetic outpouring over our narrator's dead lady, to thinking she was actually pretty lucky to have someone like him, to finally downshifting into lavish fever dreams of his own imminent and decadent funeral parade.
