Soliloquy

Soliloquy is a solo drum album by Brazilian drummer and composer Sergio Vieira, released on September 25, 2026.

The album is part of Vieira’s ongoing research into the drum kit as an instrument for contemporary and freely improvised music. Rather than approaching the drums primarily through conventional rhythmic functions, Soliloquy explores sound, texture, dynamics, silence, resonance and physical gesture as fundamental elements of musical expression.

The six pieces were recorded as a direct exploration of solo improvisation, allowing each performance to develop its own internal language. The result moves between sparse and dense textures, subtle timbral changes, abrupt gestures and moments of silence, creating a space where rhythm can emerge, disappear and be redefined.

Soliloquy continues a line of research developed by Vieira over more than a decade, including his previous solo album Introspective Landscapes (2020) and his work with contemporary music, free improvisation and electroacoustic sound.

For Vieira, the drum kit is not simply a rhythmic instrument. It is a sonic field — a collection of surfaces, resonances, noises, silences and possibilities.
