Ray Curenton
Ground Zero

"Ground Zero" is built around two core elements: fingerstyle arpeggios edited to sound like a sample, and a vocal harmony motif inspired by Crosby, Stills & Nash, Simon & Garfunkel, & The Byrds. The song explores one of Ray's earliest memories, the aftermath of which being instrumental in instilling body shame and secrecy around sexuality in Ray as a child. He, in acknowledging that his memories of the encounter might be fuzzy and not entirely trustworthy, approaches the subject matter of the song with kid gloves, choosing to illustrate the scene with imagery rather than emotions or points of view.
