Horizons
HORIZONS is the album we never planned to make—proof that God has a fine sense of humor.
After wrapping up what felt like our final statement with A Hush Falling Over the West and compiling Secret Words, I settled into what I thought would be a quieter chapter: archivist, lyric archivist, done. Then the songs started arriving anyway.
From the loose, flu-addled jam of “Never Mind The Blade” to the historical dare of “The Kaiser,” the reverent surprise of “Birth Of Nations,” the Gospel-soaked but never preachy “Parable,” the mythic intimacy of “Dear Epona,” the Hawaiian-cowboy-ukulele-jazz of the title track, the two-movement blues-to-lament of “Psalm / Higgaion Selah,” and the literal dream-born “Paging Mr. Disco” (yes, John Lennon sang it to me in my sleep), these songs came from everywhere and nowhere.
HORIZONS finds divinity in strange places: in sarcasm and history, in mandolin meditations, in tiny ukuleles, in the ache of old parables, and in the simple grace of everyday life. It’s not overtly “Christian” in sound, but it quietly insists that God is real, that the sacred is woven into the ordinary, and that there’s no need to be embarrassed about it.
Casey, Nick, and I made plans. God laughed. And we’re glad He did.
Welcome to HORIZONS. We hope you find some of that same grace, wonder, and unexpected joy in it.
