meant. is j.demar, a Tulsa-based sound artist who has been making music for over two decades. He started his musical career as a founding guitarist for The Grey Electric, a Detroit-based indie rock band that played with notable acts such as Death Cab for Cutie, Pedro The Lion & Minus the Bear. That band imploded under pressure & blew an opportunity to sign with Sub Pop Records, after which a decades-long musical hiatus ensued. However, it was after suffering a devastating personal loss in 2018 and more recent work-related injuries that left him permanently & partially disabled, that j.demar pivoted to DAW/electronic music, and found his true musical voice as meant.
Taking inspiration from Unwed Sailor, New Order, Jesu and Aphex Twin, meant.'s music is a beautifully layered, vastly melodic, gloomy yet energetic love letter of contradicting but coherent and perfect rhythms. His latest album, "diphthongize," is a testament to perseverance and hope, inspired by loss, love, and renewal. With tracks like sedulity, lorn and vow showcasing his influences & versatility as an artist.
j.demar's creative process involves total immersion and saturation, with songs starting from a feeling, memory or melody that he develops until he is satisfied. meant. is constantly experimenting with new sounds and styles, and the upcoming release, "Holy City Closed," reflects that. Available March 22, 2023, j.demar's third album is a product of his personal growth and musical evolution. He also has an ambitious 42:34 long single entitled "are you having fun in this wasteland of deliverance yet?" coming out February 3rd, 2023 with UK-based LMNL Records, and is already working on his fourth album. Fans can expect more exciting things from this talented artist in the future.
